At a point in his life when he might legitimately be winding down, Paul Weller is getting worked up. With his three most recent albums -- the latest of which, Sonik Kicks, arrived in March -- the 53-year-old former Jam and Style Council frontman has created a trilogy of late-career triumphs, transcending his usual rock and soul influences to incorporate elements of psychedelia, electronica, dub and even krautrock.

He's come a long way since the late '70s, when he emerged with the Jam as punk's answer to Pete Townshend, but even now, he carries himself with an air of mod cool. Stopping by Spinner's New York City offices for an In House visit, Weller sports slim trousers, a fitted black T-shirt and a well-manicured mop of gray hair. The tributes are rolling in for Bee Gees great Robin Gibb, who died yesterday (May 20) at the age of 62 following a long battle with cancer. Among those who have honored the late singer and songwriter are Justin Timberlake, Stevie Nicks, Bryan Adams, Liam Gallagher and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"Robin was not only an exceptional and extraordinary musician and songwriter, he was a highly intelligent, interested and committed human being," said Blair, according to the BBC. "He was a great friend with a wonderful open and fertile mind and a student of history and politics. I will miss him very much. My thoughts and prayers are with [his wife] Dwina and all the family."

It was a sentiment echoed by Timberlake, who big-upped the Bee Gee via Twitter.

"We have lost a truly brilliant musician today," the singer and actor tweeted. "One of my idols. Robin Gibb, the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who found worldwide success as a member of the Bee Gees, the group he founded with brothers Maurice and Barry, has died. He was 62.

Known for such classic hits as "How Deep Is Your Love?" and "Stayin' Alive," Gibb made headlines in recent months for his public battles with colon and liver cancer. On April 14, Gibb had been hospitalized in London after falling into a coma, but a little over a week later, he miraculously woke up. By April 30, he was up and learning to walk again. But on the evening of May 20, family spokesman Doug Wright released a statement saying he had succumbed.

"The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time."

Robin is survived by his brother Barry, the eldest of the Bee Gees' three founders. Peter Jones, a British-born drummer best known for his mid-1990s stint in the Australian rock band Crowded House, has died of brain cancer, according to numerous websites. He was 45.

Jones joined in 1994, after founding drummer Paul Hester quit the group. He stayed on until 1996, when the band split up, but did not return a decade later, when New Zealand-born frontman Neil Finn reunited the hit-making foursome.

"We remember him as a warm-hearted, funny and talented man, who was a valuable member of Crowded House," the band said in a statement. "He played with style and spirit. Were every rock star in the world to line up according to net worth, Bono would still have to look at one man's butt. That's the word from the U2 singer himself, who told MSNBC yesterday (May 18) that, despite stories that surfaced earlier this week, the Facebook IPO did not push him past Paul McCartney on the list of richest rockers.

Picking up hitchhikers is risky: There's always a chance you'll get a weirdo. That's what happened earlier today to Here We Go Magic, but the Ohio foursome didn't wind up with just any oddball. They landed the king: Film director John Waters, the mustachioed man behind such classic films as "Pink Flamingos" and "Crybaby."

Listenable though they may be, Jack Black says, the recent offerings from Jack White, Tom Waits, the Foo Fighters and Gotye all share one thing in common: They're not as good as the new Tenacious D album, Rize of the Fenix.

If Jay-Z succeeds in booking President Obama for his two-day Budweiser Made in America festival, set to go down in Philly over Labor Day weekend, Hova and the POTUS will have at least one thing to chat about backstage: their shared support of gay marriage.

Amy Winehouse may have appeared fearless, what with her tattoos, heavy drinking, drug use and all, but she wasn't immune to looking over her shoulder. According to Mark Ronson, the producer behind her breakthrough Back to Black album, the beehived songstress felt "freaked out" and intimidated by the success of fellow British singer Adele.

"She liked her," Ronson said in a recent interview with the Village Voice, "but Adele's success was making Amy feel upset, competitive, restless."

Ronson says he discovered this while he and Winehouse were in talks to begin work on a new album. Since Friday (May 4), when beloved Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch died in New York City following a courageous three-year cancer fight, fans and admirers ranging from the Dalai Lama to the Mets have been lining up to pay their respects. As fans, admirers and artists of all stripes continue to pay tribute to Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died yesterday (May 4) after a three-year battle with cancer, the most heartfelt words may have come from his mother, Frances Yauch.

"He was a very courageous person," she told the New York Times, revealing that her son died at 9AM on Friday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. "He was hopeful to the very end."

When the time came, she said, MCA was conscious and surrounded by family. After more than a decade away, No Doubt are getting ready to skank and pogo back into the public eye. The California ska-punk band has been working for some time on a new album, and now said collection has a release date: Sept. 25.

The Beastie Boys were that rare group that just about everyone could like, and last night, as artists from around the world and across the musical spectrum tweeted their respects to Adam "MCA" Yauch, who died hours earlier after a long cancer battle, Coldplay paid tribute to the fallen rapper with a special cover.

Performing at the Hollywood Bowl, the British rockers did a low-key, piano-led version of "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)," customizing the lyrics to honor the late rapper.

"I said mom you're just jealous, it's the Beastie Boys," sang Chris Martin. "So we're sending all our love to the Beastie Boys."

This May Day marks the release of Santigold's sophomore effort, Master of My Make-Believe, an album that arrives a full four years after her debut. The Philly-born, Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter has been away a long time -- not long enough to lose her relevance or miss out on the globalist-maximus, all-genre pop moment she helped usher into being, but long enough, it turns out, to forget the lyrics to "You'll Find a Way," a favorite from her first record.

"Does anyone know the words?" the artist born Santi White and formerly known as Santogold asked the audience Monday at New York City's Bowery Ballroom, where she previewed much of the new album. One fan said he did, but when Santigold passed him the mic, hoping he'd jar her memory, she found him to be of little help.

The key to seeing the Hives last night at the Studio at Webster Hall, a 300-capacity New York City venue far smaller than Swedish garage champs are accustomed to conquering, was knowing the right people. Lead preener Howlin' Pelle Almqvist admitted as much, asking who in the audience had gotten in thanks to industry connections, but he wasn't about to let just anyone one -- or anything -- come waltzing into his nightclub.

"Silence is not on the guest list!" Almqvist declared midway through, speaking as always in the mock-arrogant voice of a megalomaniacal ESL student. "Silence will have to take a few laps around the block before it can come in."

It was Pelle's way of saying "shut up and move," a phrase he might have actually uttered at another point in the show. And why not? Neil Diamond is a "Solitary Man" no longer. As People.com reports, the pop legend married manager Katie McNeil yesterday (April 21) in Los Angeles, tying the knot in front of family and close friends.

This is marriage number three for the 71-year-old singer-songwriter, who's known for such hits as "Cherry, Cherry," "Sweet Caroline" and "Red, Red Wine." Earlier today, in a wedding fit for a folk-rock superstar, Mumford and Sons singer Marcus Mumford married actress Carey Mulligan, US Weekly reports. The pair swapped vows on a farm in Somerset, England, where they kicked it low-key with their A-list friends.

Celebs on hand included Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Firth and Sienna Miller, and according to numerous reports, R&B superstar Adele agreed to sing at the reception.

What kind of mother would attempt to smooth things over with an estranged child via Twitter? The same kind that would use said social network to spread rumors about her daughter getting hit on by her late husband's former bandmate. We're talking, of course, about Courtney Love, so normal rules of parenting do not apply.

Perhaps spurred on by good feelings left over from Friday night's Hole reunion, Love hopped on Twitter early Saturday and apologized to daughter Frances Bean for insinuating that Dave Grohl had made a pass at her.
