Steve Earle is eating breakfast at Toronto's Drake Hotel. It's mid-morning on a weekday, but the place is packed with serious folks in sharp business attire, freelance types and baby-toting hipster moms. In this crowd, Earle is easy to spot.

Sitting alone, with a blue western shirt opened to his chest, a long two-tone beard and hair that hangs to his shoulders at the back while only a few determined wisps cling to the front, he seems as out of place as a vegan at a butcher shop.

Since dropping his 1986 debut Guitar Town, Earle has released 15 studio albums, snagged three Grammy awards, and is often mentioned in the same breath as great American songwriters such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.

If you're a fan of Led Zeppelin, you're familiar with photographer Neal Preston's work. From 1973 onwards, Preston served as tour photographer for the notoriously press-adverse band.

With unprecedented access to the band, he snapped now-iconic shots of Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham and more than any other photographer captured the romance and mystique of Led Zeppelin.

Now, Preston has teamed with Warner Music and Apple to release "Led Zeppelin: Sound And Fury." Available exclusively on the iBookstore, the state-of-the-art digital book takes fans on the road and backstage with one of the most iconic bands of all-time.

Back in December, when the list of 2013 Grammy Awards nominees dropped, some of Canada's biggest exports were absent from the list.

While some Canadians complained that Nickelback, Feist, and 18-year-old pop prodigy (and purported pot aficionado) Justin Bieber were snubbed, the folks at Toronto-based indie label Dine Alone Records were doing a happy dance.

That's because the Canadian indie label has three artists vying for a total of five awards at the Grammys -- the Civil Wars (best song written for visual media, best country duo/group performance,) the Lumineers (best Americana album, best new artist) and Marilyn Manson (best hard rock/metal performance).

In 2011, some humourless journalist misinterpreted a quip by Bad Religion singer Greg Graffin, and reported that the band's newly released record, True North, would be its last. The news was retweeted, reposted, and regurgitated all over the Internet.

But when the band took the stage for an intimate show at Toronto's Horseshoe Tavern recently, Bad Religion looked nothing like a band that was ready to pull the plug.

Leaning heavily on tracks from True North, its recently released 16th studio album, the So-Cal punks legends delivered a fierce set of up-tempo and hook-heavy punk rock for lucky contest winners and their plus ones.

Jason Bonham, the son of late Led Zeppelin basher, John Bonham, has made a career of keeping his father's legacy alive. So, it's surprising when he says he didn't always want to be a drummer.

"Growing up my heroes were American motocross riders," he tells Spinner. "I didn't want to be a drummer; I wanted to be a motocross rider."

Eventually, Jason, who has been playing drums since age four, relented and drifted into a music career. He's enjoyed moderate success with bands such as Virginia Wolf, Bonham, and Black Country Communion, but he is best known for his work with his father's old band.

He's filled in for his old man at a couple of shaky Led Zeppelin reunions, and manned the throne for the group's triumphant concert at London's O2 Arena in 2007. (That performance was captured on the recent DVD Celebration Day.)

It's not easy being the opening act.

Sure, you get to play bigger venues and perform for larger audiences, but every night you face a roomful of music fans that shelled out good money to see the act performing after you.
Ask Toronto-raised and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Lindi Ortega and she'll tell you that some impatient fans can be down right rude.
Slipping in to a booth, she smells something foul. There it is, a fresh turd on the bottom of her pump.
It's early afternoon, and Ben Bridwell and Bill Reynolds of Band of Horses are bellied up to the bar of Toronto's Dakota Tavern.

With rusty revolvers and steer horns mounted to the barn-board walls, a parlour piano set up on the small stage strung with Christmas lights, and bar stools fashioned from salvaged wood barrels, the country-themed tavern seems the perfect place for a couple of denim-clad members of a Southern Carolina-based roots rock band to drink away a post-gig hangover.
It's all the more fitting considering the six-steps-of-Kevin-Bacon-style association Band of Horses have with the basement watering hole.

On and off the stage, Corb Lund wears a beat-up black cowboy hat. He's a country singer and the cowboy hat is a part of every country-and-western singer's wardrobe.

For cowboys, the wide-brim of a ten-gallon Stetson provides shelter from the sun and rain, but for country singers, its more about fashion than function.

You see, most country singers aren't really cowboys. They come from suburbs and cities. They drive cars. For many, the closest they'll come to riding in a rodeo is getting drunk and trying not to fall off a mechanical bull in some seedy bar.

Corb Lund, on the other hand, is the real deal.

"My parent, my grandparents, and my great-grand parents were all ranchers. I grew up on horse back," he tells Spinner.

In June 2012, a few weeks before his band's appearance at NXNE, Spinner spoke with No Use for a Name (NUFAN) frontman Tony Sly. During that interview, Sly complained of chronic back pain caused from too many nights "jumping around like an idiot on stage."

"It's a herniated disc on my cervical spine. I'm in pain all the time and that sucks. I've been getting epidural shots, seeing a chiropractor and I'm in physical therapy. It's all a bit much, and a bit depressing," he said.

On June 14 Sly and NUFAN warmed the stage for Bad Religion during a free NXNE outdoor show at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square. That night the band delivered a blistering of set of skate-rock classics, and while Sly didn't jump around the stage, he seemed in fine form.

No one in the audience could imagine that the performance was one of his last.

Type "PS I Love You" straight up into Google and you'll get a neck-and-neck search results fight between the Kingston, Ontario band and 2007 Gerard Butler-Hilary Swank movie of the same name. Those search results could get far more confusing very soon.
We catch up with PS I Love You hanging outside Toronto's Mod Club Theatre. With a stellar performance tonight, the young band might get a song placed in a summer blockbuster. Who knows, they might even get to hobnob with A-list celebrities?

Have you ever wondered how to get one half of America's coolest rock band to produce your eponymous major label debut? If your band is The Sheepdogs, and that producer is The Black Keys' drummer Patrick Carney, all you have to do is ask.

"He was asking about the next record and he seemed genuinely interested, so we asked him to produce it," Sheepdogs frontman Ewan Currie tells Spinner.

The Sheepdogs met Carney last year, when the retro rockers played Petty Fest, a Tom Petty tribute held annually in New York.

Carney is a fan of The Sheepdogs, and he offered the young band a few suggestion for their next album.

Partway into his set at Toronto's Heavy TO festival on August 11, Marilyn Manson apologized to all Canadians for a quip he made during a recent interview with the U.K. website Entertainment Wise. When asked to confirm rumors that he was dating singer Avril Lavigne, he denied any link to the Canadian pop-punk princess and pissed off her compatriots in the process.
"Fuck that, she's Canadian," he had said in the interview, insinuating he would never sleep with a lowly Canuck.
Last night, however, he apologized and explained his comments to thousands of metal fans.

Back in 2011, when thousands of birds fell from the sky and millions of fish washed up on shore in freak die-offs across North America, most people were happy to accept the media's flimsy scientific explanations.

Serj Tankian, the Lebanese-born Armenian-American solo artist and frontman for Grammy-Award winning hard rock band System of a Down, didn't take these events lightly.
The ominous incidents moved him, so he did what songwriters do; he wrote a song.
Tankian is an interesting guy. Fans were broken-hearted when Toronto's Broken Social Scene announced an indefinite hiatus back in 2011. Though it's been almost year since the band's final performance, bassist Brendan Canning tells Spinner he's had little time to bask in past glories.

"We finished our last gig in style in Rio de Janeiro. It was a classic end to a long and crazy ride," Canning tells Spinner. "But I don't think enough time has passed to really look back."

Canning stays in touch with fellow Social Scene co-founder Kevin Drew, and says the two are open to a future reunion. BSS fans shouldn't hold their breath waiting, though. Canning has other things on the go.

No Use For a Name (NUFAN) define the punk sound that emerged from Southern California in the early '90s. Over the band's 25 year career, NUFAN has released nine studio albums, survived numerous line-up changes, weathered musical fads, and developed a more melodic sound all without sacrificing an ounce of grit.
Broken Social Scene's Brendan Canning has curated some fine facial hair in his time. So when we met on an early summer evening in Toronto's Trinity Bellwoods Park to chat about his recently revived post-BSS project Cookie Duster -- a band named after a moustache so bushy it brushes crumbs off a cookie -- we expected the indie-rock veteran to sport a helluva soup strainer.

When he arrived with barely a hint of a five o'clock shadow, we were surprised and a little let down. It just goes to show you, band names can be misleading.

Cookie Duster originally formed in 1997 when two foundation-building Canadian alt-rock bands -- By Divine Right and Change of Heart -- embarked on tour together. Canning, who was playing bass for By Divine Right, hit it off with Change of Heart keyboardist Bernard Maiezza, and the two made plans to form a side-project.

Gavin Rossdale is the handsome leader of the reformed '90s alternative rock band Bush. His wife is Gwen Stefani, the fashion designer, perfume purveyor, and lead singer for beloved and enduring '90s rock act No Doubt. They are a high-profile Hollywood couple and therefore produce plenty of fodder for the lifestyle-obsessed masses.

Reports of Gavin's teenage love affair with British transgender singer Marilyn, his alleged affair with singer Courtney Love, and predictions of the couple's inevitable divorce were just recent supermarket-tabloid headlines.

The persistent paparazzi stake out their home snapping pictures of the couple and their sons Kingston, 5, and Zuma, 3, and the tabloids publish the minutia of their personal lives.
