This Week's Free MP3 Roundup

This week's Free MP3 of the Day feature offered up not five but six new songs to tickle your fancy, including Sleepercar, James Pants and his electro-pop sound, and Camphor closed the week with two soothing tracks. Sit back, relax and download.
Album release dates mean very little these days, what with all the BitTorrents, LimeWires and other file-sharing devices that piss off the RIAA. Two days after new music from Oasis leaked, the bulk of the songs from Weezer's eponymous sixth album have found their way online in advance of the June 24th release of 'The Red Album.' In 2005, Weezer endured a similar fate when their album, 'Make Believe,' also leaked online well in advance of its official release.

The rollicking 'Troublemaker' and the operatic, stylistically diverse opus 'The Greatest Man That Ever Lived (Variations on a Shaker Hymn)' are among the eight songs currently circulating across the Internet.

Another song, the ballad 'Heart Songs,' chronicles frontman Rivers Cuomo's musical evolution, citing everything from Joan Baez and Eddie Rabbitt to Grover Washington Jr., Pat Benatar, Quiet Riot, Judas Priest and Nirvana's 'Nevermind' in its lyrics.

Meanwhile, it's not all dour in the Weezer camp, as the new disc's first single, 'Pork and Beans' has topped Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks survey.
Spiritualized's Jason Pierce nearly died while making 'Songs In A&E,' his band's first studio album in five years. But despite being hospitalized with a lengthy and serious bout with pneumonia, the man that also operates under the nom de rock "J. Spaceman," says the experience didn't really have a profound effect on his life or his music.

"I'd be lying if I said it made me want to get out of bed earlier," Pierce tells Spinner. "I haven't really been able to write about it yet. Which is almost disappointing." Ironically, the new album, which is focuses on themes of death and loss, was written and largely recorded before his hospitalization.

"The most harrowing thing for me is to have to listen to this thing again after what I went through," Pierce admits. "The songs were written more from a point of pride, like you have to face these things. It's almost like life isn't worth living unless death is around, and unless you brush up against it and have these kinds of encounters."

New Oasis Songs Leak Online

Three new Oasis songs were leaked onto the internet Tuesday. 'I Wanna Live a Dream (In My Record Machine),' 'Nothin' On Me' and 'Stop the Clocks' made their way to fan sites, messageboards and blogs.

The band's management was reportedly hard at work looking to remove the songs -- some of which also made it to YouTube -- rendering some of the original download links dead.

'Nothin' On Me' is a rocking number replete with Liam Gallagher's infamous sneer, 'I Wanna Live a Dream (In My Record Machine)' is a quieter, tambourine-laced tune and 'Stop the Clocks' features vocals from the band's principal creative force Noel Gallagher.

A release date and album title for Oasis' forthcoming effort have yet to surface, though the new material was recorded in late 2007 at London's Abbey Road Studios and earlier this year in L.A. Oasis will launch a largely Canadian tour with a lone date in Seattle on August 26. The trek wraps September 7 with a co-headlining gig at Toronto's Virgin Festival.

All good things must come to an end. Again.

The Police announced at a press conference on Tuesday that their massive reunion tour will wrap with a charity concert in New York City. The band was joined by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as they laid out plans for their last show ever.

"We kicked off our very first American tour at CBGB's in 1978 and this summer, 30 years later, our journey will come full circle as we play our final show here in New York City," the Police announced. "We are honored to partner with public television and have a deep respect for their commitment to arts and culture."

The trio's concert finale will be a fundraiser designed to benefite the production of arts programming for two New York public television stations: Thirteen/WNET and WLIW (Channel 21) in Long Island. Tickets for the gig will be available nationally through the aforementioned television stations' websites. The Police will also contribute $1 million to Mayor Bloomberg's MillionTreesNYC program, which is an initiative designed to plant one million trees in New York City 's five boroughs by 2017. The city will match Sting, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland's donation.

Trent Reznor promised that a surprise was on its way just two weeks ago, after releasing a new song, 'Discipline,' online. The Nine Inch Nails frontman didn't disappoint, as the band has released a new ten track studio album, titled 'The Slip,' for free at NIN.com "We encourage fans to remix it, share it with friends, post it on your blog, play it on your podcast, give it to strangers," a post read on the band's website.

Unlike NIN's recent album, 'Ghosts I – IV,' the new disc features the lyrical and vocal approaches of Reznor. Clocking in at just under 44 minutes, 'The Slip' features songs including 'Letting You,' 'Echoplex' and 'Corona Radiata.'

Available in high quality MP3 form, FLAC Lossless, M4A Apple Lossless and High Definition WAVE 24/96, the new album finds NIN continuing to defy the traditional music business model. Complete track list is after the jump.

Glen Campbell, the man responsible for enduring classics like 'Witchita Lineman' and 'Rhinestone Cowboy' will take on modern rock staples by the Foo Fighters, U2 and Green Day this summer. The country singer, 72, will follow in the footsteps of artists like Johnny Cash -- and attempt to reach a younger audience -- when he drops 'Meet Glen Campbell' on August 19.

"I really like all of the songs and I had a great time recording them," says Campbell, who also covers tunes by the Velvet Underground, John Lennon, Travis and the Replacements, plus two numbers originally performed by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for the upcoming disc. "While I didn't write these songs, this sounds like a Glen Campbell album, which is important to me."
