Nada Surf Ride the Wave of 'Luck' on the Interface

Nada Surf made their triumphant return to the Interface -- this time with video -- to perform five songs from their infectious new album, 'Lucky.' Armed with only acoustic guitars and a cajón, the Surf peeled away the complex studio layers of the studio versions and took a bare-bones unplugged approach.

Nada Surf's frontman Matthew Caws spoke to Spinner about the post major-label freedoms that the band now enjoys. "After we got dropped we bought a van and starting doing it ourselves," he said. "It was so simple. We made the record, we sold the record, we said 'Hi' to the people, we played the show." Caws also waxed poetic about working with Chris Walla and the unity within the Barsuk family.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova 'Fall Slowly' in Our Studio

Before Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova took home the Oscar for Best Original Song, they stopped by the Interface to show us exactly why they've captivated audiences around the world.

Prior to starring in the critically-acclaimed indie film 'Once,' Irishman Hansard had already been creating music with Czech singer-pianist Irglova. While currently the frontman of the Frames, Hansard plans to continue focusing on the Swell Season, the band name under which he and Irglova are billed.

"I love being in a band, I love rocking out, I love going on tour with the boys -- I love everything about it," Hansard tells Spinner. "But I guess right now I'm just really enjoying the simplicity with what's happened with the film and what's happened with Marketa."

Watch the charismatic duo perform their Oscar-winning song, 'Falling Slowly,' as well as two other gems from the 'Once' soundtrack. Also, find out which actor was originally slated to play the film's lead role in the exclusive interview.

Nicole Atkins and the Sea Flood the Interface

New Jersey songstress Nicole Atkins brought some Garden State flavor to the Interface. Armed with a medallion and her Sea band, Atkins delivered a rare dialed-down performance of five tunes from her album 'Neptune City.'

As for her Jersey pride -- something she shares with the Boss -- there's one Jersey-touting band she'd skip on the association. "We don't talk about Bon Jovi," she deadpanned.

Atkins also talked to Spinner about her surge of success thanks to the American Express commercial that featured her tune, 'Party's Over.' "I saw it once and it was very odd 'cause we were at a Holiday Inn or Econo Lodge," she recalled. "We're watching this commercial, and in the commercial were staying In this really fancy hotel. I'm eating cereal at that Econo Lodge and I'm like, 'Wow, this is so different from how they portray our life to be.'"

Kate Nash Laid 'Bricks' at the Interface

London's storytelling songstress Kate Nash recently paid a visit to our New York studio, opting to ditch her piano in favor of an acoustic guitar for three tunes from debut album, 'Made of Bricks.'

"I like writing from my experience because I think that's more human and people can connect with it," Nash told Spinner about her music. Nash also spoke about her other-wordly album artwork, as well as her distaste for "manufactured pop." Particularly, Robbie Williams.

New Pornographers and Neko Case 'Challenge' the Interface

Rolling seven deep, Canada's New Pornographers took to our New York studio to unload four tunes from their latest album,'Challengers.' A.C. Newman and crew -- not to mention Neko Case -- offered up power-pop duets of epic proportion.

The band also sat down to provide a little insight into their success, as well as the important things, like, well, Rockband. "I thought it was pretty funny that millions of kids all over the world will be forced to play our song," Newman told Spinner. Lest we forget the band's spam woes.

Kimya Dawson and Adam Green Unite on the Interface

The duo formerly known as the Moldy Peaches came together in the name of 'Juno.' Kimya Dawson and Adam Green were pursuing solo careers until the film's Academy Award-nominated actress, Ellen Page, suggested their music serve as the soundtrack. "[Director] Jason Reitman asked Ellen Page for suggestions for music she thought Juno would like, and she said the Moldy Peaches," Dawson tells Spinner. "She played 'Anyone Else But You,' and he decided to use it in the movie."

The Moldy Peaches offered up a performance of the tune, while Dawson went solo for three other hook-laden folk ditties -- all from the 'Juno' soundtrack.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Bring Brooklyn Soul to L.A.

New York's Sharon Jones made her way into our Los Angeles studio with the Dap-Kings in tow recently, and unloaded some sweet soul goodness from their infectious album, '100 Days, 100 Nights'

Jones spoke candidly with Spinner about her late success, which saw the singer's transformation from a prison guard to Apollo Theater headliner. "Earlier, in the '70s and '80s -- and early '90s -- I was told, 'You didn't have the look,'" she said. "It had nothing to do with my vocals. I still got that same look. Now, I'm much older, still short, still pleasantly plump. And to be 50 now, I think I'm able to deal with it. I'm able to handle the success a little better. It's the right time."

Brooklyn's soul queen also discussed her Daptone family, and influencing a promising soul queen herself, Amy Winehouse. "[Amy Winehouse's] been out here a few years and she got a record that's gone platinum," Jones said. "For her to say I inspired her, that means these last twelve years or few years, she's been listening to our songs. They've been trying to get bands to produce that sound [for her] but they had to come to the source -- the Dap-Kings. And now, you can't mention their name without mentioning my name. So, it's a blessing, and I'm very thankful for that. I hope Amy gets herself together, gets back out here and keeps doing that music -- the type of music that we're doing."
