QOTSA, PJ Harvey and Tenacious D Sign On for Natasha Shneider Benefit

Queens of the Stone Age will hold a benefit concert in Los Angeles on Aug. 16 to celebrate the life of touring member Natasha Shneider, who passed away on July 2 of cancer. PJ Harvey, Tenacious D and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron are among those who will perform at the event, scheduled for the city's Fonda Theatre.

Others slated to appear include former Distillers frontwoman Brody Dalle, Eagles of Death Metal's Jesse Hughes, ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons, producer and Masters of Reality vet Chris Goss, and Alain Johannes, who played with Shneider in the band Eleven. According to the benefit announcement, these guests "will help perform songs from the limits of the QOTSA catalog and beyond."

Proceeds from the event will help defray the costs associated with Shneider's medical treatment. Tickets are $100 and go on sale this Saturday, July 19, via Ticketmaster. Fans who cannot attend but wish to "donate to relieve the burden of Natasha's fight with cancer" can do so through www.natashashneider.org.

Foos, Pearl Jam Lead Rocking Tribute to the Who

There were no gold watches or long speeches as the Who were feted by VH1 in Los Angeles. Fittingly for a band that, according to Jack Black, were the greatest ever "because they were the first to rock hard," the two-hour-plus tribute at UCLA featured a whole lot of loud rock, along with some stirring video tributes by the likes of Sting, Slash, Dave Navarro and more. Starting with the Foo Fighters, who delivered a scorching 'Young Man Blues,' then turned the lead vocals over to Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes for 'Bargain,' the show delivered highlight after highlight.

The Foos were then followed by the Flaming Lips. Introduced by actor Rainn Wilson, who was dressed as Elton John's character in the film version of the classic Who album 'Tommy,' the Lips began their rocking 'Tommy' medley with Wayne Coyne crowd-surfing in their now trademark plastic ball. Incubus performed 'I Can See for Miles' and 'I Can't Explain.' The former song was an apt selection for the band, as guitarist Mike Einziger told Spinner it was the first Who song he ever heard. "This sounds really funny, but I heard it on one of those greatest hits of the golden era of rock or something infomercial," he said.

Following an entertaining Tenacious D rendition of 'Squeeze Box' that ended with Black's pants down around his ankles, the de facto headliner of the first half of the night, Pearl Jam, rocked the crowd with a devastatingly powerful interpretation of 'Love Reign O'er Me' and an equally raucous 'The Real Me.'

AC/DC Frontman Bon Scott's Statue to Be Uncovered Down Under

Those about to rock will be able to salute a statue of AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott, who will be permanently memorialized, appropriately, in heavy metal. On Sunday, a life-size bronze statue in the hard-living hard rocker's image will be unveiled in Fremantle, the Western Australian city where the Scottish-born Scott grew up and is now buried.

Scott, who in 1974 joined the rock band started by his fellow Scots-born Australians, brother Angus and Malcolm Young, was instrumental in AC/DC's international success, with his career highlight being the Aussies' breakthrough album, 'Highway to Hell,' on which he contributed the lyrics, along with his raw-edged vocals.

Scott, a heavy drinker, died of alcohol poisoning in 1980, at age 33. Later that year, replacement singer Brian Johnson debuted on the band's Scott tribute, 'Back in Black,' one of the greatest-selling albums of all time and as hard and dark a monument to greatness as Scott's bronze likeness will be.

Led Zeppelin Once Again Soar to Rock Heights in Reunion Show

For the vast majority of people who had traveled to the O2 Arena in London from a total of 50 countries, according to vocalist Robert Plant, to see the mighty Led Zeppelin play their first full show in nearly 28 years, the idea of merely being in the same building as the legendary rock group -- Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham (taking over on this night for his late father, John Bonham) -- was more than enough. One gentleman told Spinner that he sold his truck and came from Canada just to be here -- and was happy he did. And after a video clip highlighting the rock heroes' 1973 record-breaking stand in Tampa, Florida, a show that broke the Beatles' attendance record at the time, the long-awaited moment arrived as the quartet thundered into the first album's 'Good Times, Bad Times.'

It was evident from the start that Zeppelin was still the powerhouse of old. After following the show starter with very strong versions of 'Ramble On' and 'Black Dog,' the latter of which sent the crowd into a frenzy, the slightly retooled foursome hit hard-rock ecstasy on an extended 'In My Time of Dying.' With every eye in the house riveted on the band, the quartet took the song into a series of explosions, every one more ferocious than the previous.

'I'm Not There' Bob Dylan Tribute a Treat

Legendary musicians, actors and 'I'm Not There' director Todd Haynes himself gathered last night at New York City's Beacon Theater to honor the music of Bob Dylan, and regale the enthusiastic crowd with truly unique covers of his songs.

While the evening's musical performances were mired by frequent sound problems and bouts of confusion on stage, the malfunctions only augmented the relaxed, almost dress-rehearsal approach to the evening that made possible the many spontaneous moments -- including Todd Haynes' speechless 'Wow' moments, and quick-witted former X frontman John Doe admitting that his wife printed out the words to 'Ballad of a Thin Man' so that he wouldn't be stuck on stage.

Cementing the "let's just chill" vibe, however, was a hoodied, unkempt gum-chewing Heath Ledger --who portrays one of six versions of Dylan in the film-- and his "friends": folk group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, whose singer went shirtless, in dangerously low-cut pants for the event and told his "all-time favorite joke" about a a "toe-less Mexican named Roberto."

Highlights also included an unannounced performance from pint-sized country singer Tift Merritt, who, with the help of legendary guitarist Joe Henry, performed an intensely rousing rendition of 'A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall,' My Morning Jacket's true-to-themselves take on 'Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You' and the Roots' kinetic interpretation of 'Masters of War,' complete with a tuba solo, to name only a few.

Led Zeppelin Reunion Postponed Due to Broken Finger

Those lucky ticket holders for the most anticipated reunion show of the year, if not the decade, will have to anticipate a wee bit longer. The reconvening of Led Zeppelin for the first time in almost 20 years, scheduled to take place at the O2 Arena in London on Nov. 26, has been pushed back two weeks, to Dec. 10. The reason for the announced delay is that Jimmy Page has broken a finger, which will preclude him from playing guitar for three weeks, on advice of doctors.

"I am disappointed that we are forced to postpone the concert by two weeks," Page said about the long-sold-out show, for which a million ticket requests were reportedly made. "However, Led Zeppelin have always set very high standards for ourselves, and we feel that this postponement will enable my injury to properly heal and permit us to perform at the level that both the band and our fans have always been accustomed to."

The concert, a tribute to the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun, will also feature Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings, Paul Rogers, Foreigner and Paolo Nutini. Information about ticket refunds, as well as other info, can be found at www.ahmettribute.com.

Led Zeppelin to Reunite for Ahmet Ertegun Tribute

Giving truth to recent rumors, the members of Led Zeppelin have officially announced that the band will re-form for the first time in almost 20 years to headline a charity tribute concert. The show, to take place on Nov. 26, will honor the memory of Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun, who signed the legendary rockers to his label in 1968 back when they were calling themselves the New Yardbirds. The appearance will mark the first time that Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones will perform together under the Led Zeppelin name since 1988, with the late John Bonham's son Jason behind the drum kit, as he was during that last concert reunion of the three surviving members.
