The often-misunderstood synth- and vocoder-heavy 1982 album Trans quite literally documents Young's attempts to communicate with his non-verbal son Ben, who has cerebral palsy.
Trans has never been particularly well received -- though Rolling Stone ranks it 4/5 and Robert Christgau scores it an A- -- but none of that matters. What matters is that Young was trying to find a new form of communication. If that's not a psychedelic trip, what is?
