Debuted in 2004, Wayne Coyne's "hamster ball" -- the giant clear plastic sphere he gets into, then uses to walk across crowds at shows -- has become perhaps the defining thing about Flaming Lips shows, on par with Rob Halford of Judas Priest's motorcycle stage ride, or the appearance of evil mascot "Eddie" at an Iron Maiden concert for awesome rock show standards.
Paste Magazine considers the debut of the hamster ball at Coachella that year as one of the top 10 Coachella moments of all time.
