Back to 2011: The Year in Deaths and Breakups

From the beginning -- the 2002 single 'Losing My Edge' -- LCD mastermind James Murphy wrestled with contradictions. A New York City DJ of some renown, he simultaneously flaunted his impeccable taste, name-checking such groups as Can, Suicide and Modern Lovers, while copping to the absurdity of doing so. Such self-consciousness defined LCD's three studio albums, and while Murphy's winking jams were tagged "dance music for aging hipsters," they wound up having a much broader appeal. By the end, this "band about bands" had grown big enough to play its farewell show at Madison Square Garden.
