In what might be his best album since his mid-‘80s peak, Waits manages to make a cohesive work out of such styles as Spanish-influenced ballads, military march hell-raisers, blues-joint howlers and barroom laments. Keith Richards adding guitar on several tracks only makes it cooler. -- D.R.
