38. Destroyer, 'Kaputt'
Merge
Shortlisted for Canada's Polaris Music Prize, the ninth LP from Vancouver poet-hero (and occasional New Pornographer) Dan Bejar references Duke Ellington, New Order and Ryuichi Sakamoto, working funk, light jazz and soul into an album that sadly and magically extends the synth sprawl of his 2009 single 'Bay of Pigs.' Sixteen years after his debut, Bejar remains the same wry character, cracking wise while equally obtuse. 'Kaputt' is his masterpiece -- never mind the title. -- Theo Bark (Editor, AOL Music)
