Depeche Mode + Austra

Depeche Mode may have been patron saints to the Cali preppies in their time (see their rock doc ‘101’), but as singer Dave Gahan’s heroin problem and Martin Gore’s bondage gear stagewear would illustrate, there was a darker edge to their music. Austra may be polite Torontonians led by classically trained vocalist Katie Stelmanis, but between pounding industrial dance beats and songs about transforming into beasts, nobody would consider them music for the Hollister set either.
DNA Evidence: If Depeche Mode’s 'Walking in My Shoes' and Austra’s 'Beat and the Pulse' aren’t perfect for dancing in the dark, we don’t know what is.
