Back to Alt-Rock Then and Now
The Breeders + Wild Flag
Photoshot, Hulton Archive | Chromewaves
When Pixie-in-exile Kim Deal teamed up with Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses to form the Breeders it felt like they were holding the fort for women who rock -- and weren’t as nutcracker as Courtney Love. Wild Flag, led by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein and Helium’s Mary Timony are carrying that same banner 20 years later -- and still defining themselves as NOT being like Courtney Love.
DNA Evidence: There’s more girl power in the Breeders’ 'Cannonball' and Wild Flag’s 'Electric Band' than there is in the Spice Girls.
