Your stage name is DJ Jester the Filipino Fist. What's that all about?
Mikey Pendon: "DJ Jester the Filipino Fist is something I thought of when I was trying to come up with a DJ name over a decade ago and it just stuck. Before I was a DJ, I remember -- and I laugh about that now -- I tried to be a rapper. One time I was freestyling and somehow I was talking about my Filipino Fist being in the air and my friend started calling me The Fist. When I came up with my DJ name I wanted it to be ridiculous. I didn't want to use just DJ Jester, so there you go. It sounds like I was just trying to be funny but there's a very serious, real side to the Filipino Fist as well."
What would boxer Manny Pacquiao think of you calling yourself the Filipino Fist?
"Manny would probably love it. He seems like a nice guy, the nicest guy in boxing actually. I saw this video that Cat Power did a few months ago called 'King Rides High.' It was Manny punching a speed bag in slow motion the whole video. It hit me pretty hard. So much emotion in that song and, in a way, made me think of what Manny stands for in the Philippines for the people. He's an underdog who overcame. I'm all about that."
So what does a Filipino Fist actually sound like?
"Well, my Filipino Fist sounds like Willie Nelson and Malcolm X talking about life at a Mexican Midget Rodeo. Think 'My Dinner With Andre' but with a shorter attention span."
