Your band's name is Wheelchair Sports Camp. What's that all about?
Kalyn Heffernan: "There's a real wheelchair sports camp here in Denver every year that I went to camp of as a kid. And I found plenty of ways to raise trouble, raise a lot of hell. That's kind of where the name came from."
Are you actually in a wheelchair?
"I am."
So this isn't some jerks being ironic or something?
"It's definitely not being ironic."
Is there any real difference between a wheelchair camp and any other youth camp?
"It's a free non-profit camp that transports kids from all across the state. And it's obviously not like most camps because 300 wheelchairs are in the same place at the same time. It's pretty crazy. I was always kind of the s----disturber."
Can you give me one example of s----disturbing?
"I used to bring a big group of able-bodied friends who would volunteer. But they never actually volunteered. We got in trouble pretty much every year. We'd just stay in the tennis courts every day and we'd leave for lunch and smoke pot."
What does Wheelchair Sports Camp actually sound like?
"We're mainly hip-hop but we have an amazing singer-sax player who definitely has a jazz-soul-R&B style. And we have live drums which gives it a lot more of a noisy feel. We just try to be as experimental as possible and not try to sound like anyone else."
