Back to Concert Censorship: A Brief History
Madonna
Frank Micelotta
Considering that Madonna has spent her entire career courting controversy, it should come as no surprise the material girl's faced her share of censorship battles over the years. This very week back in 1990, the Italian Catholic Church attempted to stop her Rome concerts because they didn't approve of her creative use of crucifixes. Even in the supposedly liberal Toronto, the local police threatened to arrest her if she simulated masturbation on stage (a moment captured for posterity in her Truth or Dare doc). Madonna went through with the performance and escaped arrest. The police later claimed that they had never threatened to book the singer for being in touch with herself.
