Smooth-voiced Motown star Marvin Gaye's contentious relationship with his father reached a boiling point when the singer (seen above in a pre-hologram singing duet with daughter Nona Gaye) moved back in with his parents to look after his ailing mother in 1983. On March 31, 1984, Gaye tried to intervene in a fight between his parents, and his father shot him twice, fatally wounding the singer. The gun that killed him had been a Christmas present from the increasingly paranoid singer, who gave his father the weapon in an effort to protect his family from potential intruders and killers.
