As Judas in a 1997 staging of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar," the British actor/singer was supposed to suspend himself from a scaffold on stage, simulating a suicidal hanging, as the lights went out. But as a crowd of 600 in Athens, Greece, watched the next scene begin, they saw Wheeler's body still there, hanging limply. A doctor in the audience tried to resuscitate him, but the 26-year-old -- who'd performed the scene 20 times -- had forgotten to fix his safety harness, causing him to accidentally hang himself.
