Days before his soundtrack Return of the Superfly was to be released, Mayfield was enjoying a comeback in 1990 when he walked on stage in a Brooklyn park. Just after he plugged in his guitar, a gust of wind knocked over a lighting scaffold, which hit Mayfield. Paralyzed from the neck down, Mayfield, 57, died nine years later from complications related to the injury.
