In 1975, Wilson was about to perform one of his signature hits, "Lonely Teardrops," during a Dick Clark oldies revue when he collapsed of a heart attack in Cherry Hill, N.J. As he was taken to a hospital, Clark told the audience to "pray for Jackie." Wilson would come out of his coma, but he'd never recover, unable to walk or feed himself. According to the Chicago Tribune, one reporter wrote, "There is life. There is death. There is something in between. Jackie Wilson has inhabited that chasm for eight years." Wilson, 49, died in 1984.
