The hard-bop trumpet king was getting ready to join his band for another set at Slugs in New York's East Village when his live-in girlfriend shot him in the heart in 1972. The woman, 46-year-old Helen More, was reportedly in a jealous rage over Morgan's interest in another woman when she shot him with a gun he bought her for protection. As the 33-year-old musician died, More placed the gun on a bar counter and apologized to her victim. She was paroled in 1978.
