It's gutsy to name yourself after a country you aren't from, but for a quartet of Brits to adopt the name of an entire content is truly bold. If you're a prog-rock supergroup with ties to King Crimson, Roxy Music, Yes, the Buggles and Emerson, Lake & Palmer, you can probably get away with a name that's slightly pretentious, er, ambitious.
The band's manager suggested the name Asia, which most of the band hated right away, but lead vocalist-bassist John Wetton championed. As Wetton has explained, "I liked it -- four letters, four people." After putting all that effort into their music, their creativity must have needed a break.
