Sinead O'Connor Tears Up the Pope
YouTube
Performing on "SNL" in 1992 at the height of her fame, Sinead O'Connor pissed off a ton of people by tearing up a picture of the Pope to protest the Catholic Church's history of sexual abuse. Thousands of angry viewers called NBC to complain, and Madonna, of all people, blasted the Irish singer, saying, "There is a better way to present her ideas rather than ripping up an image that means a lot to other people." O'Connor's next album, 1994's Universal Mother, still sold 1.5 million copies but her popularity dwindled. These days, she's mainly making headlines for her mental instability.
