Dixie Chicks Vs. George W. Bush
YouTube
In 2003, Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines voiced her opposition of the Iraq War and George W. Bush, telling a London audience that "we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas." The comments led to a huge backlash, with fellow country acts blasting them in the press, radio stations refusing to play their songs, fans destroying their CDs and, worst of all, a number of death threats being made against the trio. In 2006, the band released the album Taking the Long Way, which topped the charts despite a lack of support from country radio stations. The Chicks' subsequent tour did well in liberal-heavy areas, but many shows elsewhere were canceled or moved to smaller venues. The group won five Grammys that year for the album and its single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," but they haven't released a follow-up to date.
