Back to Rock the Vote: 20 Musicians Turned Politicians

The Erotic Music Law sounds like an unfortunate band name, but it's actually a bill that launched Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic's political career. As a group, Nirvana actively campaigned against the law, which was essentially music's answer to an NC-17 rating, even playing a benefit concert for an opposing lobby group in 1992. When the EML was reintroduced to the Washington State Legislature under a different name in 1995, Novoselic formed the Joint Artists and Musicians Political Action Committee (JAMPAC) to fight censorship and other music-related issues. The bassist and activist is currently an elected State Committeeman and the chair of FairVote, an electoral reform organization.
