Back to Rock the Vote: 20 Musicians Turned Politicians
Jon Gnarr

As a teenager, Jon Gnarr played bass for a punk band named Nefrennsli (Runny Nose, in English), but perhaps the most punk rock thing Gnarr has ever done is run for mayor of Reykjavik, Iceland. In 2010, the now-standup comedian formed the minimally serious Best Party and campaigned on a series of bizarre promises that involved free towels and the construction of a Disney World at the airport. Gnarr and his crew, including fellow musician turned politician Einar Orn, also rewrote Tina Turner's 'Simply The Best' and performed it as their campaign song. The party's over-the-top antics and parodies of empty promises resonated with the citizens of Reykjavik, who voted to give the Best Party the most seats in city council and make Gnarr their mayor.
