Back to Thanksgiving and Music History
The Band's Last Waltz
Larry Hulst, Michael Ochs Archives
In the early morning hours of November 26, 1976, Band bassist and singer Rick Danko walked up to a microphone at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco and said, "Happy Thanksgiving" to a crowd of 5,000, who had eaten their Thanksgiving dinner there nine hours earlier.
Tired of life on the road, the Band decided to put on one more show -- in the same venue they put on their first. "We wanted it to be more than just a concert," band leader Robbie Robertson said in the Martin Scorsese movie "The Last Waltz." "We wanted it to be a celebration."
Guest performers included friends Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and Eric Clapton.
While there would be more Band shows in the future, this was the last with the classic Band lineup.
