Best known for giving the world reggae, Rastafarianism and sound systems, the country itself is only 50 years old. Though inhabited for thousands of years before Columbus accidentally encountered the island, Jamaica was ruled by the Spanish and British for centuries until finally achieving independence on Aug. 6, 1962.
