Back to This Week in Music History: April 8 - 14
April 10, 1967: Marvin Gaye Records 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'
Motown
Although Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, Gladys Knight & the Pips and Creedence Clearwater Revival have all done takes of the song, it's Marvin Gaye's version that rules them all. Though it was almost not released because the Pips had a hit, Gaye's version wound up topping the pop charts for seven weeks. It would return to prominence in the '80s thanks to the California Raisins.
