August 15, 1969: Woodstock Becomes Defining Event of Hippie Era
Hulton Archive
Over 400,000 people descend on Bethel, New York for the three-day Woodstock Music and Art Fair featuring, amongst others, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Santana, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Sly and the Family Stone and Jefferson Airplane.
Full of hippies, nudity, and drugs (note: watch out for the brown acid), the event was considered the cultural high water mark for the Peace & Love Generation.
During the three day fest there were three deaths, two births and four miscarriages.
