August 23, 1967: Keith Moon's Wild Birthday Party Swim
Keystone Hulton Archive
In what's now considered one of the greatest/strangest/most cliche notions of rock 'n' roll excess, The Who's Keith Moon accidentally drove a car into a swimming pool at a Holiday Inn in Flint, Michigan.
The drummer, who had been celebrating his birthday by drinking all day, getting naked, throwing cake around, etc (read a full account here), saw police coming to break up the party. Attempting to avoid the coppers, he jumped in a nearby Lincoln. Except he was too drunk to operate it and released the handbrake, causing the car to roll into the nearby pool.
Moon spent the night in jail and had to pay $24,000 in damages.
