August 31, 2002: Lance Bass Attempts to Become An Astronaut

*NSYNC singer Lance Bass entered into cosmonaut training in Star City, Russia. The plan was for Bass to become the first celebrity in space, complete with a related reality television show.

Although Bass successfully completed his training (including getting precautionary heart surgery to correct cardiac arrhythmia), a number of Bass' sponsors pulled out of the project, making him unable to pay his $20 million ticket to actually get on the spacecraft, so he got bumped from the flight.

Bass remains an advocate of space exploration, though, and says he still intends to go into space.
