Ray Davies didn't have long to celebrate becoming a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) as a part of the 2004 New Year's honors list before being shot and wounded a few days later, ironically while trying to be chivalrous.
The Kinks' lead singer had just finished having dinner with a lady friend when a gunman came out of a passing vehicle and snatched her purse. Davies chased after the men when one of them turned around and shot him in the leg.
Davies, who was nearly 60 at the time, made a full recovery.
