December 20, 1980: John Lennon Hits #1 Solo... the Wrong Way
Geffen
On this day in 1980 John Lennon finally hit number one on the U.K. singles charts with "(Just Like) Starting Over." He couldn't really enjoy it, though, as it was 12 days after his murder.
Additionally, it was only a technical first number one. Lennon's song "Imagine" from the Imagine album hit number one in the U.S. in 1971, and likely would have done so in the U.K. too, but because it never got released as an official "single" during that time period it didn't count. This, even though the Imagine album hit number one in the U.K.
P.S. "Imagine," the song, ended up hitting number one soon after.
