Pioneers of the new rock 'n' roll movement Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson died in a plane crash in Iowa. The famous Don McLean song "American Pie," with its line "the day the music died," is a reference to the crash.
