U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond began a covert operation against hippie beatnik John Lennon when he issued a secret memo U.S. Attorney General John Mitchell suggesting the Beatles singer be deported. Thurmond wanted Lennon kicked out of the country because of his stance against the Vietnam war. The FBI would investigate Lennon.
