January 22, 1972: David Bowie Declares He's Gay
Hulton Archive
Rock 'n' roll provocateur David Bowie declares "I'm gay and I always have been" in an interview with British music magazine Melody Maker. Bowie's admission was timed, not coincidentally, around the release of the Ziggy Stardust album. In a 1976 interview with Playboy he would declare he was bisexual. And in a 1983 interview with Rolling Stone he characterized himself as a "closet heterosexual."
Bowie has been married twice. To women.
