Leonard Cohen, whose only ever Grammy Award win was as a contributor to Herbie Hancock's Joni Mitchell tribute River: the Joni Letters, was given the Grammy's Lifetime Achievement Award. During his acceptance speech, Cohen joked that he "was always touched by the modesty of (the Recording Academy's) interest in my work."
Also on this date: in 1963 Neil Young made his live concert debut in Winnipeg. He was 17.
