Coinciding with the American Music Awards happening in Los Angeles, Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson corral many of the most famous names in music to record "We are the World," a charity single to benefit African famine relief, under the name USA for Africa.
Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Hall & Oates, the Jacksons, Billy Joel, Kenny Loggins, Bette Midler, Willie Nelson, Pointer Sisters, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers, Diana Ross, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder were among the performers.
