June 22, 1969: Judy Garland Overdoses
Larry Ellis, Hulton Archive
Judy Garland, who famously played Dorothy in Wizard of Oz, died of a barbiturate overdose aged 47 in London, England. Her tragic death would in part help make her a gay icon. Singer Rufus Wainwright even recorded the album Rufus Does Judy at Carnagie Hall as a tribute to Garland's live album Judy at Carnegie Hall.
