November 15, 1969: Janis Joplin vs. Tampa Police
Evening Standard, Hulton Archive
Janis Joplin got dinged with an obscenity charge stemming from an incident at the Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, Florida.
Apparently fans at the show were moving around, dancing and such, and police didn't like that, so they started yelling at the crowd to get back in their seats. An exchange between Joplin and police followed where Joplin said, "Don't fuck with those people! Hey, mister, what're you so uptight about? Did you buy a $5 ticket?"
An officer then told Joplin to inform fans they needed to be seated.
Her response: "I'm not telling them shit."
Bam. Joplin got a ticket for vulgar and indecent language.
Florida.
