November 11, 1968: John Lennon and Yoko Ono Scandalize the World With Exposed Genitals
Apple Records
John Lennon and Yoko Ono shocked and offended the prudish worldwide with the release of their album Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins. The cover for the album featured the pair standing completely naked with their special areas exposed. The back cover featured the pair naked... but photographed from behind, so you could see their butts.
Record stores had to sell the album in brown bags, much the same way porno mags were sold. In some places the album was impounded for being obscene material.
Lennon joked that any scandal the album cover caused wasn't because they were nude, but because the pair were nude and not very good looking. He even referring to Ono and himself as "two slightly overweight ex-junkies."
