Allman Brothers guitarist Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia.
Twenty years later, tragedy almost struck another classic rock band when members of Pink Floyd were injured in the Carrera Panamericana car race in Mexico. Guitarist David Gilmour received minor head injuries and manager Steve O'Rourke broke both his legs when the pair's car fell 230 down an embankment during the highway race.
Drummer Nick Mason and race partner Valentine Lindsay continued on in another car, finishing eighth.
