October 5, 1965: Johnny Cash Tries to Smuggle Pills From Mexico Across Border
Hulton Archive
If Johnny Cash always seemed to have a certain amount of empathy for convicts it was with good reason -- he committed the occasional crime himself.
One particularly memorable run-in with the law came while he tried to cross into El Paso, Texas from Mexico with a stash of pills. Cash had 668 Dexedrine and 475 Equanil pills hidden in his guitar case. He got a 30-day suspended jail term and $1,000 fine
