Back to When Airlines Destroy Musical Instruments
9) Lewis Lipnick -- United Air Lines, Lufthansa (2010)

Lewis Lipnick, a bassoonist with the National Symphony Orchestra, sued both United and Lufthansa in August, 2012 for not making "necessary accommodation" for his instruments. Legal Times reports in September 2010 the musician was at an airport in Munich. Lipnick bought an extra ticket for the large instrument, but was told he couldn't use an elevator to access the boarding area with the heavy instrument. Lipnick fell while carrying bags and the instrument on an escalator, claiming damages to his back, neck and left arm. In August the American Tort Reform Association chastised Lipnick, stating "he shamelessly seeks to blame the airlines for his poor judgement." No ruling has been made in the case.
