Brian Wilson Gets Caught in Earthquake While Performing for Sessions

Brian Wilson was caught in California's magnitude 5.4 earthquake while filming his AOL Music Sessions performance on July 29, but that didn't sway him from talking to Spinner about the Golden State theme running through his latest record, 'That Lucky Old Sun.' On the album -- released today -- Wilson revealed that he portrays "the famous restaurants in L.A., the sunshine ... the health of people in California and the California girls."

In a reminiscent mood, he admits that the iconic 'Surfer Girl' is still very much a part of his inspiration. Wilson told Spinner, "I feel the surfer girl is still alive. There was one in 1961, and there's one now. She's still the same, same girl.

MMJ's Jim James Takes Over Newport Folk Festival

Jim James, frontman of My Morning Jacket, seemingly owned the historic Newport, Rhode Island from August 1-3. When he wasn't on stage mesmerizing a crowd with his solo acoustic set and rightfully dubbing the humid weekend as 'Newport Folk Festival 08: Hot and Sticky,' he was making guest appearances with She and Him and Calexico, and enjoying the spirit of the festival.

"It's an honor to roam these hallowed halls with all the fine performers of yesteryear and today," the bearded James mellowly gushed as an earlier gust of terrential downpours along the Newport coast cleared up on Saturday. "That's the crazy thing about these kind of old festivals. It's been going on forever, and all the old festivals are still happening right now, while this one's happening. We're on top of ghosts. They're on top of ghosts. They're on top of other ghosts." He soon welcomed M. Ward (who James referred to as "Mr. Montgomery Ward") from the side of the stage to join him for a handful of songs.

When he wasn't onstage, he could often be seen appreciating fellow festival highlights like Brian Wilson or roaming the backstage grounds with a posse of people. "I saw Brian Wilson last night. That was pretty cool, to stand in the same cube of earth -- but he didn't play my favorite song, 'Merry Christmas Satan,'" James lamented before busting into his own falsetto to sing its melody. He closed his performance with an omnichord solo and then ran off stage.

Brian Wilson Readies New Album, 'That Old Lucky Sun'

Brian Wilson will return to Capitol Records -- the label that launched the Beach Boys' career more than 45 years ago -- for the release of his new studio LP. Titled 'That Old Lucky Sun,' which Wilson calls "a musical love letter from Southern California," the disc will be released on September 2. Wilson will support the album with a three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl on Sept. 12, 13 and 14.

Described by the Beach Boys' founding legend as an "interwoven series of 'rounds' and as an autobiographical travelogue," Wilson recorded the album at Hollywood 's Capitol Studios, where he first made records with his two brothers, his cousin and a friend in 1962. "I'm thrilled to be back home with Capitol, and I'm looking forward to sharing 'That Lucky Old Sun' with everyone," Wilson said in a statement. "This music is really special to me." Titles include 'Morning Beat,' 'Midnight's Another Day,' 'Live Let Live,' 'Mexican Girl' and 'California Role.'

Accompanied by transitional interludes narrated by Wilson, the album's theme is steeped in the heartbeat of Los Angeles. For the project, Wilson collaborated lyrically with his current band member Scott Bennett and his longtime "sidekick" Van Dyke Parks to create the spoken narratives. Wilson first performed 'That Lucky Old Sun' live last September at London's Royal Festival Hall during a series of six sold-out and critically acclaimed concert performances that celebrated the theater's restoration.

Beach Boy Makes Ballet Debut

Having long been oddly obsessed with the idea of seeing Mikhail Baryshnikov strip down to his jams and do the swim on some Southern California beach, we're tickled to hear word that the English National Ballet has given the green light to a piece based on one of the Beach Boys' most enduring classics. Admittedly, we were kind of hoping that the Capezio crew would tap their toes to something along the lines of 'Vegetables' -- if only for the possibility that Brussels sprouts might finally get their due on the British stage -- but we suppose we're capable of coping with a dozen Danskin-dappled dancers tripping the light fantastic to 'God Only Knows.'

That's the scenario slated to unfold when Brian Wilson himself plays the tune at a London gala being staged to raise funds for the troupe. And while we've never imagined that Wilson would be able to give Michael Jackson a run for his money in the moonwalking department, we're holding out hope that he'll be able to shake his groove thing -- or at least lift his left leg high enough to give Mike Love a good swift kick in the tuchus.
