Franz Ferdinand Give Springsteen a Run for His Money at Glastonbury

Franz Ferdinand, a band who burst from Britain into a grateful world in 2004, are not a band hamstrung with lack of confidence. But going on stage while Bruce Springsteen was single-handedly re-inventing rock 'n' roll can't have been easy.

But ask anyone who has seen Franz live: this is a band capable to taking hold of any situation, be it echoing arena or diminutive club (they road-tested new album 'Tonight: Franz Ferdinand' in smaller venues earlier in the year).

If Alex Kapranos and his bandmates were miffed at having to rival stadium rock's patron saint, it didn't show.

No mistake, Franz Ferdinand came to turn heads. This headlining Glastonbury Other Stage set was taut and muscular. "Come on, make some noise!" yelled Kapranos after 'The Fallen.'

Springsteen Delivers at First Glastonbury Appearance

In the build up to 2009's Glastonbury there were some who feared Bruce Springsteen might not understand what the famed festival's vibe was about.

They worried the man used to packing in stadiums from coast to coast might not connect with the notoriously eclectic Glasto crowd. On Saturday night, Bruce Springsteen proved them wrong the way he knows best; playing a raw, ragged, rousing set of rock 'n' roll.

It was not only Springsteen's first Glastonbury, but one of the first festivals he's ever played. It didn't show.

Classics like 'Badlands' rubbed shoulders with Yes We Can-era cuts like 'Outlaw Pete,' Springsteen a swaggering, sweating preacher.

Springsteen Lends a Hand to New Jersey Comrades at Glastonbury

As if the air of expectation surrounding Bruce Springsteen's Glastonbury headlining set with the E-Street Band at the Pyramid Stage on Saturday wasn't enough, the Boss decided to help out some fellow New Jerseyans in the afternoon.

The Gaslight Anthem – the New Brunswick band whose second album 'The '59 Sound' is regarded as having more than a little chip off the old Boss block – joined up with the band to roar through the record's title track.

"Can you hear that sound? I'm feeling waves from home," singer Brian Fallon said – before the crowd at the John Peel Tent were greeted with the sight of Springsteen striding, guitar in hand, shades in place, onto the stage.

Their one-song collaboration over, Springsteen left smiling and Fallon said to the crowd: "You've been good to us and that is our present to you."

We at Spinner Towers believe it may be some time before the Gaslight Anthem are capable of doing anything other than grinning aimlessly.

Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara Get to Know Bo Diddley's Beat

Did Bo know?

That'd be Bo as in Diddley, of course. AKA Ellas McDaniel, the rock 'n' roll architect who passed away last year. And did he know that the famous beat that came to have his name on it -- clap along: duh-duh-duh DUH DUH ... the engine driving 'Hey, Bo Diddley,' 'Bo Diddley Was a Gunslinger,' 'Who Do You Love?' ... perpetuated by Buddy Holly in 'Not Fade Away,' Johnny Otis with 'Willie and the Hand Jive,' Bruce Springsteen with 'She's the One,' U2 with 'Desire' (just to touch on a very long list) -- originated in West Africa?

Sure, that's old news. As well-documented in various musicological explorations such as Ned Sublette's fascinating music-and-so-much-more book 'The World That Made New Orleans,' the beat moved with the slave trade from Africa through Haiti and then New Orleans' Congo Square and out as the "juba" through the Mississippi Delta and, eventually, up to Chess Studios in Chicago.

But did Bo know?

"I don't know," says English guitarist Justin Adams, on the phone from his London home. "That's a question for the history of culture. These are fascinating questions."

Bonnaroo Comes to an End With a Surprise From Springsteen

This year's Bonnaroo came full circle -- the original festival was heavily inspired by Phish's own solo fests and this was the year they finally played came to Manchester. In fact, they owned Bonnaroo by headlining two of its four nights. At the first set of their last performance, they even shared the stage with Saturday's headliner, Bruce Sprinsgteen. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio introduced the Boss as a childhood hero, noting Springsteen was the first concert he ever saw, before they sang 'Mustang Sally,' 'Bobby Jean' and 'Glory Days.'

With that on top Springsteen's incredible Saturday set, Nine Inch Nails performing what they claim is their last U.S. show ever, Passion Pit coming into their own as a live band, Animal Collective teasing Grateful Dead songs, the Beastie Boys bringing out surprise guest Nas for help on a new song and David Byrne curating his own stage, it's clear that Bonnaroo is no longer anything else but Bonnaroo -- a phenomenon unto itself and, clearly, the single greatest music festival in America.

Springsteen Reigns Over Bonnaroo

Performing at just their second festival -- according to their leader -- Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band gave Bonnaroo a three-hour lesson in rock 'n' roll as Saturday night's main stage headliner.

Steamrolling through a set of anthems that included 'Thunder Road,' 'The River,' '10th Avenue Freeze-out,' 'Badlands' and 'Born to Run' while introducing the kids to hit material from his more recent albums, Springsteen proved a worthy main attraction at a festival that in recent years hosted acts like Radiohead, Tom Petty, Tool, Metallica and Pearl Jam in marquee slots. Bruce, naturally, pulled rank, declaring himself the Boss. "We came all the way from the great state of New Jersey to fulfill a vow to rock the house," he told the crowd. "But we didn't come all the way to the beautiful state of Tennessee just to rock the house -- we came to build a house."

Wilco Avoids Getting Booed at Bonnaroo

Wilco has performed at Bonnaroo several times before, but this time was different: this time they returned to the festival's main stage to "open for Bruce Springtseen" Saturday night.

The band kicked off their set with the song 'Wilco,' one of several played from the new album, 'Wilco' (yes, same name), and indulged the audience in old favorites such as 'Company in My Back' and 'At Least That's What You Said.' "If anybody boos us," said ringleader Jeff Tweedy, "we have a built-in excuse. We can just imagine they're yelling for 'Bruuuuuce!!'"
