Old China, New China and Sa Dingding's China

With the Beijing Olympics imminent, a chat with Sa Dingding -- a rising Chinese star on the global-music stage -- seemed a perfect opportunity to gain some insight into the vast and daunting world of her country's sounds. After all, her international debut album, 'Alive,' presents an artist with one foot in the music of her childhood on the Inner Mongolian grasslands and her other in a pan-Chinese approach embracing everything from Tibetan traditions to the most modern hi-tech rhythms and textures of Beijing and beyond.

So who does she want to single out as a current influence?

"Jay-Z -- I like him very much," she says. "Jay-Z has a very good sense of rhythm."

Any Chinese artists?

"Dou Wei," she says, noting a prominent Beijing pop and rock artist of recent years, whose Web site calls him "moody and creative," lists his roles in various Chinese groups of recent years and makes references to such Western acts as the Cure, Bauhaus and dark-toned English "post-rock" act Bark Psychosis. "He mixes his music -- some rap, a little electronic and plays the flute."

Lily Allen and Ed Simons Break Up

Only a month into 2008, it's already been a rough year for Lily Allen.

In December 2007, the singer announced that she and boyfriend of three months, Chemical Brothers' Ed Simons, were pregnant. Sadly, one month later, she suffered a miscarriage. Now, the Sun is reporting that Allen, 22, and Simons, 37, have parted ways.

A source close to the 'Smile' singer told the British magazine, "They tried to make things work but couldn't. The miscarriage was a horrible experience for both of them." Read the full story.

Lily Allen Suffers Miscarriage

The 22-year-old singer is "in a state of shock" after losing her baby. Allen had just returned from a vacation in the Maldives with her partner, musician Ed Simons of the Chemical Brothers.

Allen's representative told The Sun, "We can confirm that Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage. She and her partner Ed Simons will be making no further comment and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

Her debut album, 'Alright, Still,' is nominated for a Grammy. She is expected to release its follow-up later this year.

Lily Allen Is Pregnant

OK, so like, babies are totally the new handbag. Seriously though. Look at Nicole Richie. Christina Aguilera. J.Lo. Sheryl Crow. Amy Winehouse admits to wanting one. Britney Spears has two under her belt while it was announced on Tuesday that her sister, Jamie Lynn, is now pregnant. See what you started, Angelina? Nevertheless, it's with open arms that Club Knocked Up welcomes Lily Allen, who is pregnant with her first child with boyfriend Ed Simons, 37, of the Chemical Brothers.

"As the pregnancy is at a very, very early stage, the couple ask that you respect their privacy," the 22-year-old singer's rep said in a statement. "The couple will be making no further comment but they are obviously both thrilled by the news."

Meanwhile, Allen is currently working on the follow-up to her 2006 Grammy-nominated debut, 'Alright, Still,' which was previously scheduled for release in 2008. Despite rumors to the contrary, the album will hit shelves on time. "Lily's new album will be released as planned next year," her rep confirmed.

Lily Allen to Become Lingerie Agent

We knew Lily Allen had modeling chops. Just look at the provocative pose she struck when she visited our Sessions studio. The lippy Brit, who is noticeably slimmer as of late, signed a reported six-figure contract with the Agent Provocateur lingerie company. The shapely figures of supermodel (and Allen gal pal) Kate Moss, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and pin-up Dita Von Teese have served as past spokes-bosoms for the lingerie line.

A company insider said that the English panty and perfume producers are thrilled with Allen's participation because "her natural look will appeal to a lot of women." And men, apparently. Allen has attributed her weight loss partly to her new boyfriend, Chemical Brothers musician Ed Simons. "My losing weight is down to love," the singer said. Awww.

Look out for Lily in her unmentionables this Spring, when the campaign will reportedly kick off. UPDATE: Agent Provocateur has denied Lily's involvement.
