The Cure Get Unplugged at Coachella ... Literally

The Cure closed out Coachella 2009 with a surprise ending that even they didn't plan -- by having the plug pulled on them. After a set that ran nearly three hours (right around 12:40 AM which, technically, was past curfew) the plug was pulled as the Cure were still performing 'Boys Don't Cry.' Even the sound guys weren't warned, apparently.

With the house sound off and the stage lighting down, the Cure soldiered through the disaster by continuing to play a couple more tunes -- 'Jumping Someone Else's Train' and, ironically, 'Grinding Halt' -- using their monitor speakers alone before being forced off stage. The crowd, or at least, what remained of the crowd, went nuts and pulled in close to listen. This actually wasn't the first time the Cure broke curfew at Coachella. They did the same in 2004, but at that time they were only threatened with going dark. It was the most remarkable part of an otherwise unremarkable, but pleasant, set and definitely one memorable way to close this year's Coachella.

The Cure's Robert Smith Blasts iTunes

Cure frontman Robert Smith has come out swinging against iTunes over the UK pricing of the group's new remix EP, 'Hypnagogic States.'

In an expletive laden e-mail to the company, posted in its entirety on the Cure's official blog, Smith says iTunes "has managed to f--- this up to another level!" before advising fans who are easily "offended by colourful language" to look away.

"I f---ing despair again," Smith writes. "'Hypnagogic States' EP is now up on iTunes ... 5 Tracks for £7.99? For f---'s sake! And the package is completely missing the extra bonus track (65DOS Alt Remix of 'The Only One'). Who the f--- is going to pay this and not feel totally ripped off? It's not a f---ing album! It's a 5 Track EP. This is so totally wrong. Why is it so incredibly difficult to get anything done right? Please fix this now. I am posting this as I feel upset."

Potent Quotables: Gwen, Gavin Go to the Dark Side

"We don't know if it's a boy or a girl. We are going to put him [or her] in a black room. It'll be a goth baby."--Gavin Rossdale

The rocker dished on the decorative scheme he and wife Gwen Stefani will use for the new nursery. We can see it now -- a newborn being lulled to sleep by the Cure, dreaming of safety-pin-accented backpacks and eyeliner ...

Watson Twins on 'Fire' After Jenny Lewis

Identical twins Chandra and Leigh Watson were vaulted into the indie limelight after supporting Jenny Lewis on their one-off 'Rabbit Fur Coat.' But the connection to Rilo Kiley's songstress shouldn't detract from what the Watson Twins are doing now on their own, not to mention their decade-long history of making and recording music. To wit: they grew up singing in church in their native Louisville, KY, gigged around their home base of Silver Lake with various musicians for years and released their bare-bones 2006 'Southern Manners' EP under the Watson Twins moniker. "Now everyone's been asking if we feel like our moment is here," Leigh tells Spinner. "We grew up singing with groups and we love singing back up, but now it's our time."

For all their effort spent upstage singing other peoples' tunes, the Watson Twins are proving to be prolific songwriters. For debut full-length, 'Fire Songs,' Chandra and Leigh penned 30 songs between the two of them, which they whittled down to a select eleven. "We had a handful of tracks that were either two acoustic guitars or really instrumental and they just didn't fit," Leigh says, explaining how they ultimately selected the album's line up. "But mostly, we didn't want to bore anyone with two hours of our music."

The Cure Give a Taste of New Album at Hollywood Bowl

"This is a new one still," Cure frontman Robert Smith said in introducing 'The Only One,' the first single from the band's much-hyped 13th album, due in September. The Cure's current tour, originally scheduled for last year and then delayed to allow the band to continue work on the record, finds them still out well before the release of the opus.

Nevertheless, the group offered up an appetizer-sized portion of what's ahead during an epic nearly three-hour set before an adoring, sold-out audience at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night. The vast majority of the show came from a treasure chest of hits such as 'Just Like Heaven,' 'Pictures of You,' and 'Friday I'm in Love,' as well as less obvious inclusions like a stunning 'From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea,' 'Hot Hot Hot' and a guitar-shredding 'Never Enough.'

Smith's title as King of the Goths is ironclad, as he took the stsage with his trademark pale face, black attire and unruly hair. But Smith's status as a master pop craftsman is equally undeniable. If 'Perfect Boy and 'The Only One' are true indications of this new album, which Smith has said will focus more on the upbeat, then fans can look forward to a glorious addition to that pop catalogue.

Rogue Wave Offer Festival Tips, Reveal Band Crush at Sasquatch

Rogue Wave are neither strangers to the Pacific Coast (they hail from Oakland, California) nor summer festivals (they play Bonnaroo in June). To that end, the band felt right at home during their set at this year's Sasquatch festival, set in Washington's breathtaking Gorge Amphitheater. They're turn on the Wookie stage last Sunday culminated in a sparkling rendition of Zune-approved song 'Lake Michigan' that delighted the impressively enormous crowd into a dancing frenzy. And after the fireworks, Rogue Wave singer Zach Schwartz graciously indulged our Sasquatch questionnaire to reveal a serious band crush and what it's like to be a baller backstage.

Spinner's Sasquatch Survey

Is this your first time to Sasquatch?

We were here 2 years ago. I love Sasquatch. There are only three stages, so it is easy to see most of the bands and you can't beat the Gorge unless, I guess, they had a festival on that glass walkway in the Grand Canyon.

Any festival-going tips for neophytes?

1. The "Honey Bucket" (porta-potty) is not a place to have a snack.
2. Sunblock can double as hair gel.
3. Smart Water has nice packaging, but will not, in actuality, make you smarter.
4. Bands follow "set lists," so do not be discouraged if they do not play the obscure/popular song you have shouted. They rehearsed and everything.
