Beth Ditto Would Do Anything for Streisand, but She Won't Do That

Never shy to discuss weight issues, Gossip singer Beth Ditto is standing by her stance that "fat people shouldn't do drugs." "I always say that. I don't do drugs," Ditto tells Spinner. "In our history, John Belushi, Mama Cass, Chris Farley, we just shouldn't do drugs. Because the truth is we're not unhealthier, we're not incapable, but we do put more on our heart and I would not choose to do something that would make my heart beat and then f---ing explode. Think about the skinny people that die on coke from heart attacks ... f--- that s---. Fat people shouldn't do drugs. No one should really do them, let's be honest."

But the singer admits to doing Ecstasy once, at the urging of friends and fellow musicians. "I was like 25, I had never done drugs. I was with one of my favorite bands of all time, this band called Erase Errata," she recalls. "I was drunk and I was like, 'What is it?' They're like, 'Ecstasy. I promise it'll be fine, you're not gonna lose your mind.' They had to talk me into it, that's what made me do it. It wasn't just they were one of my favorite bands, it was that they were really my close friends."

Sarah McLachlan Shows Her 'True Colors' in Vancouver

Sarah McLachlan came out of hiding recently, just long enough to play a sole date on the True Colors tour. In her hometown of Vancouver, McLachlan joined a lineup that included Rosie O'Donnell, Joan Armatrading, the B-52s and Cyndi Lauper in the traveling equal-rights-for-all tour.

It was a rare appearance for McLachlan, who has only performed short sets at a handful of shows in the last three years; the singer offered up a good reason for her absence, however, as she made clear shortly after taking the stage in front of a hometown crowd. "It's been awhile for me," she admitted, adorned in a flowing dress, holding her acoustic guitar. "I'm sorry ...I got knocked up again."

Launching into 'Building a Mystery' McLachlan -- currently raising two daughters, ages six and one -- was in spectacular voice from the opening notes onward, accompanying herself solely on piano or guitar throughout the set. "How 'bout something older, like me?" she laughed, self-deprecatingly. "I just turned 40 in January ... holy shit!"

Cyndi Lauper, 'Into the Nightlife' - Video Premiere

For the latest video from her new album, 'Bring Ya to the Brink,' Cyndi Lauper decided to take matters into her own hands. Directed by the pop queen herself, the video was shot at Splash, a popular nightclub in New York City. With its infectious dance hook, the club tune seems like a perfect match for the dark yet sprightly venue. Join the pulsating party and watch the exclusive video below.

Cyndi Lauper, 'Into the Nightlife' - Song Premiere

Tegan and Sara Show 'True Colors,' Working on New Album

Sara Quin -- one-half of the musical sister duo Tegan and Sara -- admits that she is both excited and nervous about their upcoming string of concert dates, a back-and-forth shuffle between their own headlining shows and stops on the Cyndi Lauper-led True Colors human rights concert tour. "Pretty much for the last three years, all we've done has been playing to our own crowds," she tells Spinner. "That is easy. In a weird way, you become weakened. You come out on stage and everyone loves you, you barely have to do anything. Even though I know the True Colors crowd is going to be amazing, I'm terrified because we haven't done any support stuff in so long. To support the tour and what it represents, though, you can't go wrong."

The band wanted to participate in last year's string of concert dates -- a series designed to raise awareness about discrimination against the gay, lesbian, bi and transgender communities -- but were in the studio recording their latest CD, 'The Con.' Quin admits that she followed the action on tour religiously. "I felt jealous," she jokes, "because I saw [Gossip frontwoman] Beth Ditto hanging out with Rosie and Cyndi Lauper and I wanted that love, I wanted the sunshine on me." Tegan and Sara have made plans to shake their set up significantly for the human rights tour. "We're gonna strip it all down and do pretty much alternative versions of everything. It could end up being really cool or a disaster. I want to give this crowd a different look at us -- to have people hear the songs in a different way."

When their touring dates are finished, Sara jokes that their summer will contain "beverages and bikinis," but in truth, they will be hard at work on other projects. "Tegan and I are both writing furiously for the next record," she says. "I have always felt like I was squeezing songs out of me slowly, but lately I've been writing a lot. We recently played a show with Death Cab For Cutie, where we talked with [guitarist/producer] Chris Walla who worked on our last record. We're pretty much signed up to work on our next record with him again."
