Eels Won't Tour Behind 'Hombre Lobo' Just Yet

WIth a new album, 'Hombre Lobo', now on shelves, one would expect that the Eels would be on the eve of a world tour to rally behind it. Unless, of course, one knows the Eels. Leading man Mark Oliver Everett (aka. "E") says he thinks the whole idea of touring just to promote an album seems a little bit, um, off-base.

"I'm not going to disrespect the audience by going out there and doing something that my heart's not into," E tells Spinner. "And it's not into it right now. But that could change at any moment." Put that way, well, we don't want you out on the road either, E.

Eels' Mark Oliver Everett Remembers Jackson as 'Staggeringly Talented'

When Eels' E (aka Mark Oliver Everett) calls Michael Jackson a "weirdo," he does so with affection. In fact, E has nothing but respect for the late pop icon and his music.

"They don't make stars like Michael Jackson anymore," E tells Spinner. "Staggeringly talented, from his first hit with the Jackson 5, 'I Want You Back' -- one of the most deceptively complicated and amazing pop songs ever made -- to 'Billie Jean' ... We won't be seeing his like again. Plus, he was a genuine weirdo, which is always a plus in my book."

Jackson died Thursday at the age of 50.

Eels' Mark Oliver Everett Tackles Desire on New Album

As with every new Eels work, the recently-released 'Hombre Lobo' is a remarkably cohesive album that sounds like, you know, an actual album (as opposed to an iTunes playlist). Both sonically and thematically, it's as unique as all the others. Oh, the tortured soul is still there and E (aka Mark Oliver Everett, who is the Eels) remains quite the spokesperson for loners, outsiders and recluse-types.

"The idea of desire was interesting to me," E tells Spinner. "Musically, in my mind, that equaled the electric guitar. And something kind of in your face."

But having bared his soul in an autobiography last fall ('Things the Grandchildren Should Know') and then having starred in an episode of the PBS series 'NOVA,' which documented his real-life quest to discover his deceased father (both as a person and as a groundbreaking scientist), there's nothing more for E to say about himself right now.

Eels, 'Prizefighter' -- Video Premiere

It's been said that to find what one is looking for, one need look no further than their own backyard. If you're Mark Oliver Everett -- aka "E" -- make that the laundry room. In the video for 'Prizefighter,' directed by Gus Black and filmed in E's basement studio, the frontman and sole proprietor of indie-rock's Eels stumbles upon hidden treasure of another kind. "The discovery of my grandfather's World War 2 army trunk in the laundry room provides us with the perfect bass drum," E tells Spinner. "See the fun unfold. Col. E would be proud." Watch the exclusive premiere below.

Eels, 'Fresh Blood' -- Song Premiere

Mark Oliver Everett -- aka "E" -- frontman and sole proprietor of indie-rock's Eels will release, 'Hombre Lobo,' the first Eels album in four years, on June 2. It's only fitting that the first single be called 'Fresh Blood.' After all, "hombre lobo" translates to "werewolf."

"I wrote a song a few years ago called 'I Want to Protect You' that was about wanting to protect someone from the wolves," E told Spinner. "Now I am the wolf."

Listen to 'Fresh Blood' below, exclusively on Spinner.

Eels' Mark Oliver Everett Comes to Terms With Death, Life and Physics

Mark Oliver Everett is known to his fans as "E" -- frontman and sole proprietor of indie-rock's Eels. But the scientific community knows him as Mark Everett, son of Hugh Everett, the man who invented the 'Many Worlds' theory of Quantum Physics. It's a theory that turned the quantum world upside down and, half a century later, is still shape-shifting the way we look at the world (or, as the case may be, an infinite number of worlds, of which, ours is just one of an infinite number of parallels). If it sounds like the stuff of science-fiction, well, that's because countless movies and books have taken the idea of parallel worlds and run with it. But the truth is it may not be so fictional. As the theory has gained momentum and credibility, so has Hugh Everett's fame.

Unfortunately, Hugh Everett died when E was 19-years-old. E was always tight-lipped about his private life and so even the few science enthusiasts who figured out that their favorite songwriter was also the son of their favorite physicist had no idea that E not only discovered his dead father's body, but his mom also died in his arms (having lost a battle with cancer) shortly after his sister committed suicide. His cousin died on 9/11. His sister's boyfriend tried to stab him to death. He's had the kind of life few would want to survive, let alone write about for the world to read.

This week, Mark Everett's memoir, entitled 'Things the Grandchildren Should Know,' recently hit American shelves. PBS will air a NOVA film entitled 'Parallel Worlds, Parallel Lives' about E's quest to find out more about his father and his theory. With last year's Eels compilation, 'Meet the Eels,' playing softly in the background, Spinner recently sat down for an unusually revealing conversation with the last surviving Everett.

How deep have you gotten into your dad's theory?

Well, it's one of those things that's so huge -- it has to do with how everything works. And it's such a heavy mind-blowing idea that it's hard for us to wrap our linear thinking minds around. Every time I start to really get a grasp on it, a few minutes later I lose it. Which, I think, is a common thing. The most I ever came to understanding it was during the filming of the documentary. I had the luxury of being taught by the leading quantum physics experts in the world. And the viewer gets to learn through my stupid eyes, along with me.

Eels Frontman Purges Tragic Past in New Memoir

Mark Oliver Everett -- better known to his fans as "E" -- is the frontman and sole proprietor of indie-rock's Eels. But the scientific community knows him as Mark Everett, son of Hugh Everett, the man who invented the 'Many Worlds' theory of Quantum Physics. It's this identity multiplied by tragedy (his father died when E was 19, His mom died in his arms having lost a battle with cancer, his sister committed suicide, his sister's boyfriend tried to stab him to death and his cousin died on 9/11) that prompted the ever-elusive E to purge his storied past in his new memoir, 'Things the Grandchildren Should Know.' In the exclusive excerpt below, E finds his discovers his father's body, only too late to save him.

As I walked out the front door, I thought I saw something strange in my peripheral vision: my father lying on the couch, as he always did after watching the news, but backward -- with his feet where his head usually was -- which would have been highly unusual, something I had never seen. But I was late and as I hurried out the door, I decided that I must have imagined it and kept going.

I woke up early the next morning so I could make the two-hour drive to register for fall classes in Richmond, but something didn't seem right. I don't know how I knew, but I could tell something was wrong.

I went upstairs and the usual signs of my father going to work were not there. No lights were on and it was eerily quiet. I ran up to my parents' bedroom, trying to mentally prepare myself for the worst-case scenario. As I walked in the room, I saw what I was afraid I would see: my father, lying there faceup on the bed, sideways, fully clothed, on top of the covers with his legs bent and his feet almost on the floor.

I thought maybe he fell asleep like that. I said, "Dad? Are you awake?" He didn't respond. I started to panic.

I yelled, "Dad! Wake up! Come on!"

I shook him. "S---! Come on!"

I yelled right up against his ear, the same way I did with Liz. Just the fact that I was touching him was surreal. I grabbed the phone and dialed 911. When the operator answered I told her that my father wouldn't wake up. She asked where he was and I told her on the bed. She told me to pick him up and carry him to the floor so she could instruct me in CPR. I put the phone down, pushed my arms under his body and picked him up. His entire body was completely stiff, like a board. I carefully carried him across the room, his body frozen in the position that he was in on the bed, and lowered him to the floor. I put the phone back to my ear and told the 911 operator that his body was stiff and asked her what to do next. She said, "Oh ... well ... um, just wait there. Someone will be there soon."

As she finished the sentence I heard sirens blaring in the distance. He must have died the night before. The 911 operator knew there was nothing to do after I told her his body was stiff. The ambulance came and they checked him out. They put a sheet over him and told me to go downstairs. He was only fifty-one. I was in shock and didn't know what to do. It was hard to know even how to feel. My father had just died, but I barely had a relationship with him. And here I was, alone with him in the house, just the two of us. Only, he was dead.
